CLOISTER GARDENS OF CASA ROMANA

The garden design project was implemented by Katerina Gkoltsiou in collaboration with Maria Tsagari, Architect and Landscape Architect and it was commissioned by the Archaeological Institute of Aegean Studies Rhodes. The study area refers to the cloister gardens of Casa Romana, in Kos.

The project has sought to protect and enhance the existing character of the gardens of Casa Romana. Therefore, the planting design followed the idea of the installation of low vegetation types -shrubs and ground covers-. The plantings were massive in free shapes (curves) in a gradual way (high-mid-low shrub-herbs), referring to the garden design of the 19th century.

Similarly, the planting design around the statues was highlighting them rather than obscuring them.  The majority of the proposed plant species were indigenous, with a long lasting flowering period and evergreens.

Particular attention was paid to the design and construction of a small water feature in the center of the garden, taking into consideration the weight of the construction in order to preserve its existing walls and the renewal of the water in order to avoid noise and bad smell.
