LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE
EVALUATION AND REVISION OF THE GENERAL FRAMEWORK OF SPATIAL PLANNING AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT ABOUT THE PREFECTURE OF NORTH AEGEAN
The Landscape character assessment was implemented for the Ministry of Environment and Energy. Katerina Gkoltsiou worked as a scientific expert with a multidisciplinary team of scientists PRISMA EPE, Linos Triandafilidis, Chris Mandilas.
The aim of the landscape study was to identify the landscapes of particular value (International, National, Regional) as well as landscapes particularly degraded, to classify them into landscape units, to conclude to landscape types and to adopt measures for their protection and management.
The proposed methodology consisted of the following phases:

Collection of primary data: Recording and collection of maps showing physio geographical data (geology, relief, land cover / vegetation, hydrology) and cultural elements (land uses, settlements).

Field survey on the islands of Samos, Ikaria, Chios, Lesvos, Lemnos, in order to make a primary recognition of the nature of the islands' landscapes and to identify the particular characteristics requiring rehabilitation, conservation and special management, the scenic routes and the remarkable points of view.

Classification into landscape units

Typology of landscapes based on their predominant character as derived from the combination of forms, functions and values. Eg Landscape types: Tourism, Cultural-Religious / Archaeological / Historical-, Environmental, Rural, Urban, Aesthetic-Architectural / Productive -Metabolic-).

Definition of landscape assessment criteria, in order to conclude to landscapes of particular value and degraded landscapes, based on the international bibliographical references and recommendations as established by the various organizations (UNESCO, IUCN, ELC, ICZM Protocol).

Identification of landscapes of particular value and degraded landscapes in each landscape unit.

Classification of landscapes based on their value (international value, national, regional) for the entire region of the North Aegean.

Conclusion to specific threats and pressures.

Definition of objectives for the landscape protection at regional level.

Adoption of measures and actions for protection and management
